Baseball
1882 was the first professional season for the Pittsburgh Alleghenies (Pirates) but in 1887 they moved from American Association to the National League because owner W. Nimick was frustrated over a contract dispute.
In 1900, The Pirates were purchased by Barney Dreyfuss, who was dubbed as the "Father of the World Series". Under Dreyfuss, the Pirates won world titles in 1901 and 1902 (Pre-World Series).
The Pirates won National League Pennants from 1901-1903, 1909, 1925, 1927, and World Series in 1909 and 1925.

Hockey
First played in 1895 ice hockey became popular and in 1899 the Duquesne Gardens opened. In 1901 a semi-professional ice hockey league, the Western Pennsylvania Hockey League (WPHL) was based in Pittsburgh and was possibly involved in the first trade of professional hockey players.
The Gardens was the largest indoor rink in the world and was home to the city's first NHL franchise, the Pittsburgh Pirates, from 1925 to 1930. In 1967 as part of the 1967 NHL expansion, the Pittsburgh Penguins, since their inception, have played home games in Pittsburgh. The Penguins have won the Stanley Cup Championships in 1991, 1992, 2009, 2016 and 2017.
